What we accomplished!
Project Need and Process: By Genesis
We chose this issue because we saw an excessive number of homelessness in our community and in other parts of LA county compared to places like New York and Salt Lake City that are almost fully sheltered. Los Angeles only has about 22% of housing available for the homeless it has also gone up about 75% in about 6 years. Our project involved volunteer work, bringing awareness about the problem to our school, and the creation of care packages to help people who are homeless in our community. We made a slideshow to raise awareness and the result shocked us with the total percent of homelessness in South La and other parts of La county was 58,000. This was part of research that was done that has the percentages of homelessness. On our first day as a group we selected a few big problems in our community like racism, bullying, sexism, and homelessness. In unity we all ended up with facing the issue of homelessness. After we did our first fundraiser which was to raise money for gifts to support foster care children part of Extraordinary Families. Then we had a guest speaker Melissa Osborne who donated copies of her graphic novel to us called The Wendy Project. We talked to her about the story and how it was made, how teens experience grief, and she gave us journals so we could write about our own story. It was a great meeting. Later on in March we supported #Hashtag Lunchbag and went and made sandwiches and care packages for the homeless people living in Skidrow. This was a great event and we learned about what we wanted to do for our own community. When we got back we planned a presentation for our school about homelessness and glow and the dark fundraiser to raise money for the care packages we want to make. Now we are making 125 bags that have toothbrushes, tampons, food, bandaids, wipes and we are donating them to the local food drive that St. Brigid's Church and Testimonial Cathedral will host right near our school on May 18th. We are proud of the work we did this year and want to do more.
